WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF ESSA?

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is a United States federal law that was signed into law in December 2015. It replaces the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and is intended to provide states with more flexibility in how they hold schools accountable for student performance. The purpose of ESSA is to ensure that all students have access to a high-quality education that prepares them for success in college and the workforce.

One of the key goals of ESSA is to promote equity in education by providing additional resources and support to schools serving disadvantaged students, such as those in low-income neighborhoods or those with a high percentage of students from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups. This includes providing additional funding to support programs that have been shown to be effective in improving student outcomes, such as early childhood education and after-school programs.

Another key aspect of ESSA is its focus on accountability. Under NCLB, schools were required to meet certain performance targets in order to receive federal funding. This often led to a focus on standardized test scores as the primary measure of student performance, which many critics felt did not accurately reflect the quality of education being provided. ESSA maintains the requirement for annual testing in reading and math, but it also allows states to develop their own accountability systems that take into account other factors, such as school climate, graduation rates, and access to advanced coursework.

Overall, the purpose of ESSA is to support states in their efforts to provide all students with a high-quality education that prepares them for success in college and the workforce. This includes promoting equity by providing additional resources and support to disadvantaged schools, as well as promoting accountability by requiring schools to meet certain performance standards. By focusing on these key goals, ESSA aims to improve student outcomes and help ensure that all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
